MILLÉSIME BIO 2018: 25th EDITION OF WORLD ORGANIC WINE FAIR
This year the global event for organic wine will take place in France’s leading organic production area, the LanguedocRousillion (Occitanie Region). From the 29th till the 31st of January 2018 Parc des Expositions in Montpellier will be dominated by the best organic wines from across the whole world. Over three days, 950 exhibitors from all wine producing countries and regions get to meet many wine trade professionals from all over the globe. There is a rise of 50 (!) exhibitors stands at the 25th Edition in comparison to the last edition. Millésime Bio is the largest international platform for organic wine and is supported by the Occitanie region’s winegrowers. These winegrowers are members of the fair organisation body, Sudvinbio. Occitanie is France’s leading organic farming region in terms of surface, number of farms, and organic agricultural production. Occitanie represents more than 1/3 of French organic vineyards – which in total is almost 71000 hectares – and produces more than 800.000 hl of organic wine.
NUMBER OF VISITORS INCREASES EVERY YEAR
Last year the number of visitors was already overwhelming. The Marseilles show had more than met its targets, cementing its position as an international platform for the organic wine industry. 4850 interested purchasers – against 4500 purchasers in 2016 – in the Marseilles-Chanot Exhibition Centre. The number of international visitors increased with 20% over the last years, primarily coming from Europe, North-America and Asia. In 2017 exhibitors of 16 countries were represented: France comprised the majority with 700 winemakers from all over the country. Italy and Spain were equally well represented with 9.5% and 7% of the exhibitors. This year at the 25th edition, the event will be even bigger and the expectations are set higher.
CHALLENGE MILLÉSIME BIO 2018: 16 JANUARY 2018
Challenge Millésime Bio is the official wine contest of the Millesime Bio trade fair, with a worldwide range of more than 1400 wines in the competition. The contest will take place in Altrad Stadium, Montpellier. The jury is presided by a leading figure in the wine business. Head of the jury 2017 was for example Joris Snelten. He is the CEO of Delta Wines, one of Holland’s largest wine importers, and parent company of Coenecoop, a company specialised in organic, Fairtrade or “sustainable” wine.
ABOUT THE ORGANIC WINE INDUSTRY IN FRANCE: IT’S GROWING!
In 2016 France had 5263 organic wine farms. The certified organic vineyards and the vineyards converting into organic were covering 70.740 hectares. The French domestic consumption revenue of 2016 was 792 million euros, a growth of 18.2% in addition to 2015. Of this, direct sales hold the majority of the market with 324 million euros, (41%), followed by specialist organic stores with 183 million euros, (23%); artisan traders (wine merchants, grocers etc.) with 150 million euros, (19%); and supermarkets at 134 million euros, (17%). In terms of export, organic French wine represents 2/3 of French organic product exports, with a value of 419 million euros in 2016.
